Need help understanding the temperatures of my CPU cores

TLDR: My CPU temps seem to be getting too high, and I don’t understand if these are manageable, or they are running TOO high, that I need to fix something.

I built my PC for high performance gaming. I have a great graphics card (RTX 3080) and I got what I believed to be the best performing CPU: Intel Core i9 14900K. The cooler I am using is the H150I Elite by Corsair (again something I believed to be one of the highest performing coolers available). With high end specs like this, I can game at 240hz, which was my goal in building this PC. All seems fine, but using the Corsair software that tracks all of the temps (including for the individual cores) I see that the temps are spiking crazy high.

Where the “package” of the CPU is listing ~40°C, some of the cores spike up to high 60’s and low 70’s °C when idle. When gaming at high workloads, the CPU can list around 70°C with the cores spiking in the low 90’s and sometimes 100°C. All prior research tells me that the CPU shouldn’t really go above 80°, but definitely try to keep it under 90°. I am not sure if the individual cores are meant to spike that high, where as long as the package and overall CPU temps are staying manageable below that threshold I’m good, or if this is cause for concern.

I have cleaned and reapplied thermal paste assuming this would solve the problem, and I am still seeing high temp spikes.

Above all, I just need some help understanding these temperatures, and if these temps are worth worrying about, if I need a different cooler, if I need to learn how to underclock if that would be a solution, or what.

P.S. I had an issue before where the CPU completely burnt out and needed replacement from temps getting too high. The individual cores stayed at 100°C, where as the package remained in the low 80’s. My dumbass assumed that the PC would shut down if it sensed the temps getting too high, as well as my hubris assuming that this beast of a PC should be able to handle these temps. Overall, it was a very costly lesson to regain my fear of high temps.

Thank you for any responses that can help me understand these temperatures better, I cannot afford to replace my CPU once more.
