Need help with Hard drive connection

    Locked

    by bharatthackar ·

My hard drive crashed and I installed a new drive as primary. What I would like to do is install the old drive as secondary. My controller cable under the old setting (with one hard drive) was set as hard drive to cd-Rom. And second controller cable as mother board to floppy only. How do I set up my system with two hard drives and two other drives (meaning cd & floppy)?
    Plz help.

It is dependant on your motherboard.

Generally the Floppy is on a separate cable – running of a separate controller.

Most motehrboards will have 2 connectors to run IDE controllers from. You hook up one hard drive to one of them, and the second and the CD to the other ( or any other combination of this.) You will have to get the spare cable – borrow one from another machine if you have old stuff lying around.

You will need to swap the jumper on the old hard drive itself to “slave” position (it would have been on master).

Generally the two IDE connectors are together on the motherboard. If not sure then you need to determine the motherboard make/model and look up on the net, or find your book for it.

Just to add to the above, you should check the BIOS also, if it can autodetect the drives if it set to NONE…
in your case, if you need to see the 2 HD and CD, then depending on BIOS you need to set autodetect for the 3 drives.
Also one of your data cables should have a dual connector, so you can connect the 2 HD to one or any combination you want as discribed in the first answer.

      Good Luck

Each hard drive will have a setting for master and slave (MA and SL). The NEW hard drive should be set to MA and on the end of the cable which is connected to the Primary controller on the motherboard. The Primary controller should be labeled as PRI. The OLD hard drive should be set to SL and connected to the 2nd connector on the same cable. The CDROM drive should be set to MA and connected to the Secondary controller which will be marked as SEC on the mbd. If your floppy drive is a 1.44 only it will connect to the FLOPPY controller on the mbd. If it is an LS120 then it should be set to SL and connected to the 2nd connector with the CDROM drive.
