Need Help with home network

By Xearon ·
First let me admit that I am not a network guy and so some of my questions probably seem simple to some of you. Please bear with me and help me out.

I set up a simple home network with a netgear wireless router, a laptop, and a pc. I have two problems.
1) I regularly get "Page Cannot be Displayed" errors in IE. If I open a new browser I can get through but it takes 1-3 tries.
2) I cannot download from p2p filesharing networks like LimeWire. LimeWire says it is being blocked by the firewall and disconnects.

Any suggestions?

The P2P issue

by mjwx In reply to Need Help with home netwo ...

is with the firewall on the router. find out what port lime wire is running on (this should be under options somewhere but the default is 6346) and open those port(s) on the netgear(connecting to the netgear should be in the instruction manual).

with the browser issue, it might be IE. try an alternate browser like firefox. if you have the same issue check the firewall settings on the router (ports 80 and 443) or if you are using wireless check to see if that is working properly (to test this just plug in a blue cable directly).

post again if you have trouble with these instructions.

some other helpful fun

you may also want to check out the windows firewall which may be doing the blocking.
Go to start
double click control panel
double click windows firewall
click the exceptions tab
then click add program and see if you can see lime wire in the list if you can double click it to add it to your exceptions list.

If not then browse for the application and add it to your exceptions list also make sure you have a check mark in the box next to the application. hope this helps
