We currently have 6 servers connected to an 8 port GB unmanaged central switch. The remaining 2 ports on this switch connect to 2 more 24 port unmanaged switches. These switches are where all the user workstations are connected to.
We are having an issue with 1 server. It is our SQL reporting server, and whenever large reports are run it tends to slow down the entire network including shared drives on other servers. I didn’t think it should affect other drives, since they are located on an entirely different server…but, I assume since all servers are tied into the central switch, there must be an overload of some sort when large data is passed during these large SQL reports…am I correct?
And, if I am correct…is there a better way to setup my switch layout? Do I need to run the SQL server on an entirely seperate switch apart from the other servers? Will this improve network performance during peak periods?
