Need help with software licensing!!!!!

By ecluv ·
This is my first job as a Network Admin. One of my dauting task is software licensing. I need to make sure that we are up to date and compliant. The problem is that prior to me, this issue was always pushed back and no one did the software licensing. I have no experience in software licensing. I know there are volume license, open license, etc. Also, the company has no software to manage inventory or software. I will probably have to do this via spreadsheet. Can anyone tell me the best route to take?

What a cluster mug that is going to turn out to be. If you have a lot of PC's, you definitely will want to do a software based inventory report. Google will be your friend to find one as I only have experience with Novell products for this (ZEN asset management).

You should really develop a good working relationship with your IT vendor as they should be able to point you down the correct path, such as volume licensing (depends on how many PC's you have as to which agreement should be selected i.e. open, select, enterprise agreement or enterprise subscription agreements)

Just make sure that you get complaint soon as there are HUGE fines involved with non-compliance.

Best of luck!!

How big is your site?

How many servers and client systems? Sometimes a simple spreadsheet is the easiest solution.

After you get a count on what you have, I would contact each applications' vendor and ask them to explain their licensing options.
