    Locked

    by lyncheagle55 ·

I have an amd 1.6 gig duron with 256 ddr ram and 60 gig hard drive, I had a problem with win xp freezing up in me when I tried to boot up. So I tried to do a clean install. I fdisk the hard drive and formatted it .then I tried the new install but an error came up it said “halacpi.dll could not load.setup cannot continue. etc etc, ” so i tried to go in and set it up with six floppies from the win xp boot disc files that i gotr off the internet still it wouldnt load. I alco tried to boot from the cd and it gave me the set up screen but without a menu {might as well been the blue screen of death for all it was worth, since all it said was windows xp setup and nothing else.
can you help me get xp loaded on my computer . thanks. by the way, I even used a win 98 startup disc to get assistance from the cd rom , it began to work but would load fully because of that Hal.dll error.

It sounds like some of your hardware is not supported by XP. This might be the long way, but if you can install Win 98 on it, then you can have Win XP Setup analyze your system, and will tell you what is compatible and what isn’t.

Start by booting form a floppy and running fdisk again.
      First, run fdisk /mbr
Then, run fdisk and delete at least the primary DOS partition.

Now, boot from the XP CD, and use the XP setup program to partition and format the drive.

If it still locks up, you have a hardware issue.

      Start with new RAM.

Make sure that your power supply is rated for at least 300 Watts output.

Verify that your CPU fan is working properly.

You say you have a 1.6 GHz Duron processor.
If you do have a Duron CPU, and it has been clocked at 1.6GHz, that may be the root of your problem.
AMD offers the Duron in a maximum clock speed of 1.3GHz.
      Clocking a 1.3 at 1.6 is a 23 percent over-clock.
That WILL produce a lot of additional heat, and shorten the CPU life.
If the CPU has been over-clocked, start by replacing it and the CPU cooling fan.

If setup keeps haulting at a specific file that means one of two things, a unsupported or damaged hardware compnent or a bad media. Since it seems that the hardware is relatively new it might not be that and it also seems that you have checked that. I would probably say its the Windows XP CD, its probably scratched at that point and the computer can’t read it. Get another XP CD and try loading it from there. If it haults at the same spot then you know its a hardware issue and then you can focus on that.
