VMM32.DLL controls Window's Virtual Memory, and deals with the swap file (using the hard drive to simulate RAM). It is possible the dll file could be corrupted from a virus or bad sectors on the hard drive. If the machine is running Windows 98, isit possible to boot into safe mode (hit F8 when it starts to boot into Windows)? If so, go to Start->Run and type SFC. This will run the System File Checker, which will scan for damaged system files, and attempt to restore them using the Windows CD.
If it is not possible to go into safe mode, there could be some serious trouble with the disk or operating system. Try booting from a Startup Disk and running scandisk to see if it will correct the problem. If not, the only solution may be toformat the drive and do a clean install of Windows.
The VMM32.dll file also contains driver files for a variety of things. It sounds like the file is corrupt or has had something added to it that causing a problem. If your running Windows 98, the best way to start is run System File Checker (sfc.exe). You don't have to go into Safe Mode, but it won't hurt. Once started, select "Extract one file...". In the windows type in VMM32.dll. It'll need the Windows CD. It'll ask you to backup the old one, and believe it'll give you a default location it back it up. Ok everything and reboot.
Looks like your VMM32.DLL is corrupted. Best way is to reinstall Windows to rebuild your vmm32.dll. You don't have to format your drive.
Boot from a floppy disk. Make sure that you have Config.sys in the floppy disk that contains DEVICE=HIMEM.SYSand that Himem.sys is also on the disk. Also, if you are using CD-ROM, makes sure the driver is also loaded.
Go to C:\WINDOWS or the directory where you installed Windows. Rename Explorer.exe to something else with a different extension, like Explorer.xxx.
Run Setup from your CD or from the directory where you have the installation files of Windows. Then just follow the prompts. When Windows finally installed and restarted, you'll see the same settings as you have before.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
