Need more help on possible virus!!!

By dwilliamson ·
Thanks alot, it did help, but now I need more.. after trying to edit command.com (bad command or file name) I did a dir/p on the c drive. Here is what I found, all the files and directories on the drive had been renamed. Example:

command.com tocommaod! com
windows <dir> to wineows!
autoexec.bat to attoeyec.omd
and so on throughout the whole directory.

Is there a fix for this short of reformatting the drive and starting over. I realize this would be a good lesson to the end-user to keep all inportamt info on the server that is backed up nightly but it is a sheriff computer with lots of important info on it. Can anyone help. Many thanks in advanced!

With this much manipulation of the computer files you are better off just backing up the user data (sheriff's files) and then reformating and reinstalling the OS and other applications on the machine. The task will be less since you will only need to rename the userfiles to their correct filename. To go through and rename all of the files and correct every single change manually is a daunting task.

anytime problems are this deep i suggest f-disk and unconditional low level format. otherwise even after a standard reformat you can have the problems still. btw check bios for corruption. if found, reset bios from board or take a chance with reset from bios.

I can't help you to fix the problem, but I can point you in the right direction to see if indeed a virus has caused this. go to www.getvirushelp.com Here you should get all the latest information about viruses and how to fix the effects of virus infection.
