Need to change a password.

By valpou ·
I have been assigned to a computer of a previous employer. When trying to sign-on I get a screen asking for user id and password. In the user id blank the former employees name is given. The password blank has nothing in it-alas, the problem. We have no way of knowing what the former employee's password was but need to get access to information in the computer. Is there a way to change the password. The operating system is Windows XP professional.

local or in a domain?

Is this a local computer account or in a domain?

If it's a local account you should be able to log in with administrator and change the password in user manager.

Administrator

Log-on as Administrator and create a new account for yourself.

If it's a domain account, just put in your new user ID and password, make sure the domain is selected, and Windows will create a new profile for you when you log in.

Call your IT department

by Mohammad Oweis In reply to Need to change a password ...

I will assume that you are connected to a domain (you can enter a user/password, and the computer belong to the company)
So, just call you IT department, they can easily change the password of the old employee, or can just give you the data.
