Need to copy files/shared directories

By rales_bessard ·
Hi,
I am looking for a software that can copy files and shared directories from WinNT 4.0 to Win2K while keeping security (rights and permissions) intact.
Anything in mind, let me know.

Thank you

Rales

Need to copy files/shared directories

I use Backup Exec as my default backup application. When I perform a restore to a different location <redirected> with options <preserve permissions> I obtain the same structure of folders and permissions on other computers. But these two computers are in the same domain.

Also you must have a log of the copy process (try to put after "command" >copylog.txt).
Many utilities can't copy the files in use. You must denied the access to these files or make a schedule task for hours when these files are not in use.

The SCOPY.EXE utility on the Resource Kit will copy files and directories between NTFS paritions while keeping security intact.

XCOPY.EXE, which is a part of WinNT/2K will also do this.
Say you wanted to copy C:\temp\*.* to a mapped drive X: that points to another server. Here is the XCOPY syntax:

XCOPY /E /C /Q /H /K /O /X /Y C:\TEMP\*.* X:

All of those switches tellXCOPY to copy the files and any subfolders to the destination. Also copy over the ACL info, file auditing info, file ownership info, file attribute info. Plus, do not display what you are copying over. Also, copy everything over without asking the user to confirm each file. Also, if there is an error in copying the files, do not stopy the job, just keep going.

hope this helps

The best tool I can think of is robocopy (robust copy from the NT resource kit). Works like xcopy, but you can configure it to do alot more. I copied the readme.txt below for your reference.

Usage : ROBOCOPY source destination [file [file]...] [options]

source : Source Directory (drive:\path or \\server\share\path).
destination : Destination Dir (drive:\path or \\server\share\path).
file : File(s) to copy (names/wildcards - default is "*.*").

options : /S : copy Subdirectories, but not empty ones.
/E : copy subdirectories, including Empty ones.

/T : Timestamp all destination files, including skipped files.

/R:n : number of Retries on failed copies - default is 1 million.
/W:n : Wait time between retries - default is 30 seconds.
/REG : Save /R:n and /W:n in the Registry as default settings.

/TBD : wait for sharenames To Be Defined (retry error 67).
/FAT : create destination files using 8.3 FAT file names only.

/X : report all eXtra files, not just those selected.
/V : produce Verbose output, showing skipped files. /L : List only - don't copy, timestamp or delete any files.

/A+:[R][A][H] : add the given Attributes to copied files.
/A-:[R][A][H] : remove the given Attributes from copied files.

/XA:[R][A][H] : eXclude files withany of the given Attributes
/A : copy only files with the Archive attribute set.
/M : like /A, but remove Archive attribute from source files.

/XF file [file]... : eXclude Files matching given names/paths/wildcards.
/XD dirs [dirs]... : eXclude Directories matching given names/paths.

/XC | /XN | /XO : eXclude Changed | Newer | Older files.
/XX | /XL : eXclude eXtra | Lonely
