Need to setup pptp on Win2k workstation

By jdclyde ·
Windows 2000 pro, SP4, fully patched, new install.

Works nicely, has full internet connectivity.

Need to setup vpn, but when I go into the New connection wizard, only dial-up to internet and accept incoming connections is available. All others are grayed out.

I looked in the properties to add a protocol, but didn't see pptp or vpn as an option.

Tried google, but everything I have found assumes that option is available at that screen, and it has been over a year since I have had to deal with this on a win2k system.

Help? Thanks!

you mean that when you run the new connection wizard [start, control panel, network connections, network tasks in the left pane, create a new connection], the connect to my office workplace [VPN] isn't in the list?

humm, thats odd. regardless of whether you have ethernet LAN or just dial up, the connect to my office workplace [VPN] should be available provided your logged in as an administrator and there's no GP applied that restricts access

Some things to check:

1. Make sure there aren't any duplicate RASapi32.dll files - there should be only the one in the %systemroot%\system32 folder.

2. Make sure the Telephony and Remote Access Connection Manager services are running.

Hope this helps!

Also, this is from a MS knowledgebase tech article - see if it helps:

1. Start Registry Editor.
2. Make a backup copy of the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\Next
3. Delete the following value: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\Next
4. Quit and then restart the Make New Connection Wizard.

not quite the answer, but you had some good ideas to check. Thanks for trying.

Have made sure Telephony and remote access connection manager are running.

The user is part of the administrator group.

The VPN is in the list, but it is grayed out so you can not select it.

There isn't a domain controller or group policise as this is a home computer.

When I first go into "new connection" it wants to use the modem and I have to hit cancel. There is a modem, but it is not being used at this time.

There was a problem with the line from my very soon to be ex-internet provider, SBC/AT&T. That was the load that shattered the camels back, and as of the end of the month, I am history!

Anyways, how I "fixed" the system.

I went into IE and the Connection settings. I created a connection in the area that you usually can setup a dialup, and deterimine if it is to manually dial or not.

I setup one like that, selected the TCP/IP, and VPN and saved. Sure this didn't work, but when I went back into the create new connection, the VPN option was no longer grayed out.

I know, this should not have fixed the system.
I know that this is stupid.
I know that I pissed around with this for three days, all because it would not work.

Thanks for stepping up and giving me a hand with this!
