Need Utility

By joel ·
I'm looking for a utility that will allow me to print out a list of every directory and file on a CD. Kind of like a table of contents. Havn't had any luck looking on the web. I might not be searching right.

Well, there is always the old DOS method. Open a DOS window, changer directory (CD) to the cd drive ((?)) and try typing this:

dir /s > c:\report.txt

This command will list all the files in a directory, the /s means it will list all the files in the sub-directories and the > c:\report.txt (call it anythhing you want) will send the results to a txt file on the C: drive. Then you can print it or do whatever.
Hope that helps.

You might try to run this dos command in the CDROM.
[cd drive]:\dir *.* /s >C:\dir.txt

This dos command will create a list of folders and files contained in the CDROM folders.

Greetings,

You don't need any special utility - unless, of course, you consider DOS an "old" utility.

1. Open a DOS window

2. Go to the CD Drive (E: for example)

3. At the command prompt enter: dir/s/p

(The /s gives a listing ot the contents of all subdirectories, and the /p will pause the scroll one page at a time.)

4. If you want a printout of the directory tree, you can send it to a printing device by adding the following:

dir/s>prn

(Note: "prn" is the default print device. That could be substituted with LPT1, LPT2, or any networked print device i.e., \\server\printdevice)

At the DOS command prompt, enter dir/? to see a list of all possible switches.

(DOS - you gotta' love it.)

Maxwell

Interesting "side note"

When I started to answer this question, the question list indicated that there were 0 responses. After I submitted my answer, the list indicated that there were 3 answers. However, when I opened the question again, Icould only see 1 answer - mine (listed as the 1st answer).

I believe that this is how other people might post an answer similar (or identical) to a previous answer. It might take several minutes for Tech Republic to list all posted answers. How it determines the order, who knows?

(Just a side note for anyone who cares.)

Regards,

Maxwell
