Net Send message tracking

By Valley Boy ·
Does Windows keep a log of messages transmitted by the Messenger Service (Net Send)? (i.e. a log containing sender PC name, receiver PC name, and the message).

Cheers.

Net Send message tracking

On NT (4.0, 2000, xp), the system log in event viewer keeps a log of received messages including from, to, and the message text.

It doesn't keep a log of sent messages.

Like the above answer said, only received Net Send messages are logged in the Event Viewer -> System Log. Here is an example:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event I 26
Date: 1/7/2003
Time: 5:29:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MYWORKSTATION
Description:
Application popup: Messenger Service : Message from SERVER1 to MYWORKSTATION on 1/7/2003 5:29:50 PM

2003-1-7, 17:29:33, Daily processing completed

As you can see, popups have an Event ID of 26, which you can use to filter and export from the Event Viewer.

hope this helps
