net use prob dos client win2k pdc share

By tomhass ·
Have following:-

1 x Win2k Server SP3 PDC /w Active Directory with shared folders - access - Everyone

2 x Win2k Adv Server with shared folders - access - Everyone

Problem is that when I use a Ghost or PowerQuest DOS boot (DHCP) disk I can net use/view merrily to connect shares on 2 x Win2k Adv Server but not anything on PDC

I have DNS/WINS enabled on the AD/PDC and the fact that I can view all but PDC indicates no problem there. I have not installed NetBui protocol on PDC but I should not have to...?!

I am completely stumped...please can anyone help.

Tim

Update - since posting this I have found that adding an entry for the PDC in the lmhosts file on the dos client fixes the problem BUT....I don't understand why this has fixed the problem - if WINS/DNS was my problem why could I happily connect to the other server plus 1 Win2k pro PC ?!

Still desperate to understand what is going on here :-(

When the DNS server receives a request to resolve a name for that zone and does not find a host record in the zone database, it will query the WINS server to see if that name is in the WINS database.

Thanks but I already knew that - my problem is that DNS/WINS looks okay - there IS an entry in WINS and DNS for the server in question and all other nodes resolve okay.

Anyone else with info that could enlighten me ?

I could be wrong b/c my DOS is rusty, but I do not think that DOS used DNS/WINS. It was made for LANManager and NETbui. With the pointer in the lmhosts file it knew the IP to look for.

I don't think this is the problem as the DOS boot disk is running LAN Manager client v2.1 - which I understand should use DNS/WINS okay - in any case if DNS or WINS wasn't working full stop how come I can net view/use the other servers by name ?

Appreciate the try.....any more ? (I have upped the points to tempt someone...)

Ok let me try this one. What kind of protocol are you using? MS-CHAPv2 is not compliant with LAN Manager. IP-Sec will also not work. I am thinking that it has something to do with your security on the server. Try allowing CHAP or MS-CHAP and see if that will work.

Not using IPSec and haven't specifically set up any CHAP/MS-CHAP stuff. Is CHAP/MS-CHAP used as standard on Win2k PDC and not standard Win2k servers ?

...will try enable/disable CHAP/MS-CHAP and see what happens...

I am still searching for an answer.

The last post about CHAP/MS-Chap is interesting though but I have set the server up pretty much vanilla - this shouldn't include default security settings that block DOS Lan Manager v2.1 clients.....should it ?
