NetBIOS name conflict

By ajdelo ·
I'm running NT 4.0 SP6a on a PDC and a BDC on a network with 11 Win98SE clients and I'm not tied in to any other domains (my domain is name ABC).
I had a PDC named ABCFS_01. I then installed a BDC named ABCFS_02 and promoted it to the PDC. All computers are able to access all resources on both servers and everything works fine on the network.
However, I'm getting a name conflict on ABCFS_01 (which used to be the PDC and is now just an app server and secondary WINS). The following is it's NetBIOS name table:
ABCFS_01 <00> UNIQUE Registered
ABCFS_01 <20> UNIQUE Registered
ABC <00> UNIQUE Registered
ABC <1C> GROUP Conflict
ABC <1E> GROUP Registered
ABCFS_01 <03> UNIQUERegistered
GLOBAL ADMIN <03> UNIQUE Registered

This is the only name conflict that is on my network. I have no users with names beginning with ABC. Is the fact that my domain is named ABC and I have two servers beginning with ABC causing aname conflict on my network?

Hi,

I think you need to remove any WINS records for your domain(ABC) with IP-address of your old PDC(ABCFS_01) from both WINS-servers. And after that you need to reboot both servers in order to let them re-register in WINS-base.

Did you remember to demote your old
PDC? I don't think you should have to do
this, but it may be acting up a bit...

Worth looking into anyway....

If you have two nic's installed in
ABCFS_01, then that will be causing the
problem. You can solve that by unbinding
the netbios protocol from one of them.

Thanks Antony, that worked and I have no more errors. However, when I try to install RAS (and reran SP6a) I get a Service Control Manager error.
In Event Viewer:
EVENT ID = 7024
DESC = The Messenger service terminated with server-specific error 2270.

As far as I know, that is a NetBIOS name problem, but I have checked all of my machines and there are no more conflicts.

Any suggestions?

Gretings,

when you're running multiple protocols, make sure you have TCP/IP as your default protocol.
