netbios problem ?

By jackthe ·
Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a problem with windows networking/browsing and I wonder if someone can give me a couple of tips.

We had all of our servers and workstations on one switch (small
company) - 3 or 4 NT servers and about 20 workstations. I have just made the network more scalable by putting in an extra switch and router. Network now looks like this (hope the diagram turns out ok).

---------
| router |
| |
---------
| FE trunk link
|
--------- Fe --------
| switch |----| switch |
--------- --------
vlan 1 vlan2

So now all packets vlan 1 <-> vlan 2 go through the router.

Vlan 1 has the servers, Vlan 2 the workstations.
We are using Wins/Dns on our PDC and only run IP.
The workstations get their IP address's from DHCP, the Wins/NBT type is 0x2 (wins only).

Browsing has become noticeably slower, we run no win95 so master browser is PDC.

TCP/IP connectivity is fine, links are not dropping any packetsand have plenty left. Router cpu is fine, as is the trunk link. No errors anywhere.

Can anybody give me some clues as to what is slowing down the browsing??

Thanks in advance,

John

netbios problem ?

Hi , the browsing mechanism is a little bit diffrent as you mean.
1.) You have two diffrent vlans.
2.) MS-Browsing election is made via broadcast.
3.) You have an PDC as the Domain-Master-Browser, but you have also a normal Master-browser and Backup-browser.

As you splited the network in two pieces, a master Browser election is starting every morning and when the MB is down.
The new Masterbrowser then connects to the Domain-Masterbrowse, and registers his function for the subnet. After this his going to select some Backup-Browsers, cause this one are doing the work for him.

I could write hours on that, but it won?t help you.

The reason for your Problem is that you had build two vlans. Normaly a PDC is the Domain-Masterbrowser and a BDC is the Backup-browser and so on. When you have all Machines (Server and Clients) in one LAN, there is no need for an new election of an Masterbrowser, but now the clients could not reach ...sorry.. the Server could not receive an election paket and therefor they couldn?t answer.

Resolving the Problem:
1.) Configure the Switchs so that broadcast are allowed.

or

2.) Configure one Client as an Masterbrowser and disable this mechanism on all others. (Have fun !!)

I hope it helps you !

You could also enable WINS on the PDC, being sure to set the netbios node type to one which tries the WINS server first (if not exclusively).

That should help somewhat.
