NETBOOK WIN7 CDrom ?

By Beginner9 ·
Hi

I have an ACER ASPIRE ONE D250 NETBOOK with WindowsXP installed on it.

I want to install Windows7 ultimate on it. I connected to external CD rom and booted it windows7 CD. so far so good

when I want to install the windows7 IT DID NOT SHOW ME ANY HARD DRIVE

It gives me only 2 options REFRESH & LOAD DRIVERS

If I boot with winXP cd I can see 150gb Hard drive ( I can delete create and format Partaton with WinXP cd)

This system is WINDOWS7 capable.

How can I install Windows7

THANKS

Firstly the Acer Aspire 1 isn't Windows 7 Ultimate capable

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to NETBOOK WIN7 CDrom ?

This is a low power Net Book with a very low powered CPU an dis only capable of running the most basic version of 7.

The version that is so basic that it is not available in your country but only third world countries.

Second issue is that the 7 Install Disc is a DVD not a CD so you need a External DVD Drive to load this OS.

But if you insist on loading this I wouldn't recommend you activating it as you will be wasting a Windows 7 Ultimate License as you'll find that this system is unusable and by activating that License you will be tieing it to this Hardware forever more.

Here you need to make a Slipstreamed Install Disc and include the Acer Aspire 1 SATA Drivers for Vista as there are no Windows 7 ones. To do this you'll need vLite available free here

http://www.vlite.net/download.html

Just make sure to read the Help Files available here

http://www.vlite.net/help/

These Net Books do not have enough processing power to even run XP Professional well if in a usable manner and come with the Home Version of XP for a very good reason. It has the lowest Windows Resource Foot Print available. By loading even the Home Version of 7 will overload this system but the Ultimate version is not only a waste of money but a waste of perfectly good hardware for what it was designed for . The Net Book will be so slow that it will effectively be unusable.

If you are unhappy with the performance of XP on this hardware you will be devastated by the performance of 7 and if you want better performance try the Ubuntu Net Book Remix available free here

You need the SATA drivers. That's why you can't "see" the HDD. Just because you can install a program or OS doesn't mean that you should load it. He was just trying to save you some grief, but if you insist . .

still not convinced that netbook will run 7 Ult, did you run the compatibility tool?
If you are trying to boot off an external drive, make sure the BIOS is configured to boot off it first, check that

by balge In reply to Understand the question

hi
when I checked the link it only lists Win 7 Starter x32 (which I presume means x86 or 32bit) drivers NOT ULTIMATE!
is this a disk you burned yourself?
or a Genuine Microsoft one....
checked the DVD by trying another disk or drive?
cheers

Upgrade Advisor

by TheChas In reply to NETBOOK WIN7 CDrom ?

I suggest that you download and run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor utility on this system before your next attempt to install Windows 7.

As to not showing any drives, there are 2 possibilities:

1. You CANNOT perform a standard upgrade install on a Windows XP system to Windows 7. As you do not have a blank drive, the installer cannot find a free drive to install Windows 7 onto.

2. Your hardware does not support the Windows 7 version you have. Either an error in the installer or a bug in the BIOS is creating the no hard drive error instead of a hardware does not support this version of Windows error.

Also, per the Acer web site, the supported Windows 7 version is "STARTER", not Ultimate!

http://us.acer.com/acer/productv.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&kcond61e.c2att101=58051&sp=page16e&ctx2.c2att1=25&link=ln438e&CountryISOCtxParam=US&ctx1g.c2att92=843&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=127634522#wrAjaxHistory=1

My 2 cents for what it is worth.

Little Brain work for IT

by Beginner9 In reply to Upgrade Advisor

lol

I don't know how you are in IT. God Bless IT.

Leave Win7 for now

USE your brain

UBUNTU cannot detect the hard drive for partition

Both OS has the same problem.

Winxp can detect the hard drive and I can install winxp but not any other OS. winXP performance is crap.

My m8 brought this laptop with WINDOWS7 and says its very fast in win 7 (May be Basic version)

Its intel atom 1.6ghz with Hyperthreadig enabled.

There is no settings available in BIOS.

a little brain work could install UBUNTU

I give up and installed winXP and told my M8 to try winxp for a while and as I am preparing for CCIE I will find the problem later.

God Bless IT
