Netdiag results quandry

By dburress1 ·
I have a problem on my LAN with 3 of 4 workstations, (Win2K Pro not Server is my OS) that access the internet via a cable router (linksys) and cable modem (Motorola SB4100), ISP (Comcast). Netdiag says that no gateways are reachable: "excerpt from netdiag /v"
"Default gateway test . . . : Failed
Pinging gateway 192.168.1.1 - not reachable
No gateway reachable for this adapter."

Ironically, I can ping this gateway from a command line with no problem on these workstations.

If I take the router out of the picture all together by connecting any of the problem workstations directly to my cable modem and let the ISP supply the IPs, I get the same problem but for a different, altough command-line pingable, IP address. All NICs are set to Win2K defaults with regards to DNS, etc. The cable router is also defaulted.

I need help in resolving why only 1 machine of the 4 workstations pass all of the netdiag tests. When all 4 are configured the same.

Thanks for any help provided.

If the SB4100 is anything like my SB3100, and the cable company has configured your modem the same as mine, then the problem is as follows: The SB3100 allows only one MAC address to communicate with the internet. All other MAC addresses are ignored. To solve the problem, unplug the 3100, Connect the linksys to the SB4100, plug in and power it up. Then plug in and let the 4100 go through its boot process. It should notice the MAC ID of the linksys router, and all should go well. You can see the status of the cable modem by vistiting http://192.168.100.1 (at least that works for mine). Check the addresses page, and you may see something like Known CPE MAC Address (max 1): and the MAC address of the one device that is allowed to access the internet.

Thanks so much for the insight into the modem configuration. It added to the list of things that I need to keep up with. Unfortunately, MAC address in the modem was that of the Linksys router. I tried resetting the way you explained but the problem still exists. For grins I added yet another PC to the network (it's running WinXP Home Edition) and it works fine with regards to nslookup and command line ftp. Aaaarrrghhh, is there no end to my problem. Again, thanks but I am still in need of answers.

The problem turned out to be zonealarm. Although it is was not started automatically from program files > startup, something from it was still running. After uninstalling, not just merely shutting down zonealarm, all my problems went away.
