Netexplorer????

By tommymcbrayer ·
Just wanted to verify. Isn't netexplorer used for managewise? I have 4 netware 6 servers and netexplorer is running on 2 of them and I don't know why because we are not running managewise.

To the best of my knowledge (MCNE, but only for 2 yrs.) NetExplorer simply runs on your management server and is not needed unless you are running ManageWise suite for discovery and reporting.

Here's what Novell says:

NetExplorer Manager, on the ManageWise Console---updates the ManageWise database with data collected by the NetExplorer components on the ManageWise server.

NETXPLOR.NLM on the ManageWise server. Communicates with the NetExplorer Manager on the ManageWise Console and with the discovery NetWare? Loadable ModuleTM (NLMTM) files (NXPIPX.NLM, NXPIP.NLM, IPGROPER.NLM, and NXPLANZ.NLM) that are actively discovering network objects; stores data in the sequential NETXPLOR.DAT file

So this confirms the need for ManageWIse to process the data collected in the Netxplor.DAT files.

Further findings:

NetExplorer NLM Software:

The NetExplorer NLM software resides on the ManageWise server. It consists of NETXPLOR.NLM, NXPCON.NLM (a utility to configure and monitor NetExplorer operation), and the discovery NLM software.

After the discovery NLMs obtain information about the network, it is communicated to NETXPLOR.NLM, which saves it in a local file (NETXPLOR.DAT).

YUP, unload it, if you find you really DO run reporting, you can always reload the nlm's. Don't forget to comment them out from reloading on restart (not that our stable Netware servers ever need restarting).
