netlogon error

by dheupel In reply to netlogon error

The Netlogon service is dependent upon the Server service. Make sure that the server service is starting when the server boots. Check the server service in the Services applet in Control Panel. The Server Service should be set to start automatically, and logon as system. If the server service still does not automatically start up when the server boots, check the event viewer for more detailed information, and event IDs. Then check and search on the event IDs reported in Event Viewer.

Also, if you have recently added a piece of hardware to your server, or upgraded a device driver, then reapply your Service Pack 6. Actually, NT 4 is up to Service Pack 6a, and I recommend using that Service Pack. In some cases, reapplying the service pack fixes problems with services loading up properly. Certainly try reapplying the service pack. You've only got about 15 minutes to lose by trying that, and it might work.

The server service not loading is a common problem after renaming a PDC in a one server small office/home office network type of scenario. If this describes your situation, you may be able to resolve the conflict and get the machine running under the new name, or you may have to revert to its oldname, or you may end up rebuilding the server entirely.

Good luck!
