Netscape process will not die

By greggen ·
I have noticed that on several windows 95 and windows 98 PC, when Netscape has a problem, stops responding, crashes, ect. Sometimes it leaves a rouge process running. Restarting Netscape does not help, it just adds another process to the list. Otherthan doing a full reboot on Windows, you have to end each Netscape process in Task Manger before you can use Netscape again.

All I can find about this is to either disable JavaScript, and that does not make surfing fun, or to empty the cache, as the fat.db file sometimes gets corrupt.

Does anyone one know of a command line utility that I can use to kill this specific netscape process? I was thinking that I could start Netscape with a batch file, running that command line. Or is there aparameter that could be added to Netscape.exe?

The versions of Netscape we use are 4.5 or 4.7, and using IE or another browser is not an acceptable option.

Thanks.

I had heard about Kill.exe, but it is my understanding that it will not 'automatically' kill a process. I believe that you need to specify what process you want to kill with this. Thanks!

I made a shortcut to the cache and put it on my tool bar. Telling Netscape to delete it's own cache won't delete the fat.db. Before starting Netscape for the day, I always clear the cache and delete the cookies. The problem I believe is a java issue usually from a web page designed to be viewed by ie. I too am a diehard Netscape user although I don't care for version 6. Try using the shortcut, and it will help some.

I know there are issues with the Fat.db, and I agree that this is a Java issue. Manually clearing the cache does not help this issue. Thanks!

command:
kill -f pattern.

means f(orce) kill
the pattern can be a complete task name o a regular expression pattern to use as a match. kill matches the supplied pattern against the task names and the window title.
