Netscape will not connect

By calm dog ·
I recently upgraded Netscape 4.76 to 4.79. Immediately after the install, NS was 'unable to locate the server...' - ANY server. It is as if there is no connection, however IE, Mozilla 9.6 and my FTP program work fine. I am connected over a networked ISDN line and no one else has a problem.
I have tried restoring a previous registry, rolling back to NS 4.76, checking TCP/IP settings, and recreating the prefs.js file. NS acts like there is no phone connection.
I'll settle for any version ofNS at this point. I'm out of ideas and time is getting critical.

Upgrading Netscape sometimes works, but not always.

I suggest that you go to control panel and add/remove programs and remove netscape from your computer. Then run through a regedit and search for instances of Netscape and delete those keys. Save and reboot. Then install Netscape 4.79 (I have 4.78, didn't know there was a .79 out!).

If you keep your user folder intact, then your account, e-mail, (you should probably delete the cache folder under program files... netscape... users... etc), then none of that will be touched. Also remember to backup your bookmark.htm file so that you will not have to recreate all your saved links.

Unfortunately, I've already tried that - regedit and all. In fact, just to be thorough, I even tried it as a new user - no prefs, no bookmarks - fresh start. I even did a complete virus scan. What's left - fdisk?
Your advice was right on. Seems like it should have worked, doesn't it.
Thanks anyway, Anna.
