Netware 3.2 license upgrade

By talstadt ·
Clinet has Betware v3.2 (10-User. Has obtained a Netware 3.12 (50-User) license. Is there an easy way to upgrade without completly reloading OS?
I copied netware.exe to the server.312 directory but get an error message that there is not enough memory for DET. I manually registered the memory to no avail.

Netware 3.2 license upgrade

The user count for Netware 3.xx is embedded in the SERVER.EXE file that is loaded by DOS when the server boots. Copying that to the C:\SERVER.312 folder is the proper method to upgrade the user count.

Although the error message make it sound like this could be a problem with getting Netware to see all the memory in the server, I would think you'd have noticed that problem earlier.

The problem probably lies in the fact that you repaced a newer version of the SERVER.EXE program (v3.2) withan older one (3.12).

Version 3.2 is, generally speaking, the same as version 3.12 with all patches applied. Many netware patches re-wrote the SERVER.EXE. So, it's entirely possible that there's something internal to the 3.12 executable that'snot compatible with the rest of the system.

Replace the SERVER.EXE program with the original 3.2 executable, then see if the server starts normally. If is does, you know where the problem lies. If not, it's something else.

Because you are running V3.2 so I would like to request that Netware send a server.exe V3.2 with 50-user, they can send it over email or FTP. I don't suggest that you would do it in a backward version will cause more troubles. Because most of NLM's are in V3.2 version ready, so server.exe V3.12 won't work.

As far as i know Novell never sold Netware 3.2 as a retail package. It only exists as an enhancement pack.

This being the case, and your customer still has the original 3.2 Enhancement pack CD you could just patch the 3.12 server.exe with the tools in the enhancement pack. (normally it consists of swapping the loader, lswap c:\server.312\loader.exe c:\server.312\server.exe)

After the Enhancement pack Novell published a newer loader that deals specifically with memory registration problems. Get it at http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/2941672.htm (remove any spaces from URL)

Hope that helps..
