Netware 5.0 Setup

By quintar51 ·
Hi,

I'm thinking of setting up a novell server at home, I do have netware 4.11 and 5.0. I'm assuming that 5.0 is the better one, but I know nothing of it. Does anyone have/know of the steps I should take and anything I should watch out for as I'm setting this up?

I'm going to use this novell server in conjuction with a w2k server.

Thanks in advance,

Netware 5.0 Setup

by Alpha-Male In reply to Netware 5.0 Setup

Netware 5 is outstanding software...I have been running it on my server for a couple of years now and the only time the machine has been down was when we had a power outtage that killed my UPS battery!

Setup is not very difficult, but investing in a good book would be well worthwhile. In Netware 5, the install has been greatly streamlined and works from a GUI interface.

To get started, create a small dos partition and add cd drivers etc. Before you start, have a feel for the way you wantto configure your tree. Choose simple, logical names...if you create a monster name for your context you'll regret it everytime you type it!

Let Netware partition the rest of your drive and install. I'd just use the default settings to get started.

Start out only setting up the features you know you'll need. Also, make sure you are connected to a hub/switch as you start. The install can hang when you create the tree if it can't communicate with the LAN. The actual install process is very straight forward. Having a good book will help a lot though...I particularly liked "Accelerated CNA" and "Accelerated CNE" (inexpensive and very good/concise references) though the Novell Press Big Red bibles are awesome. Once you get it online, install the Netware client on a workstation, login and launch NWADMIN. From here you can do most of your configuration. Create users, groups, etc. Making templates is a great idea as it will streamline the process. Be careful about the context you create your users in...otherwise it can cause confusion. Then create your printers and add the other required features (not sure what you need).

Netware 5.0 Setup

The commands to use on your server when you get started are monitor (shows status, info etc), inet config (to setup and configure network connections etc), pconsole (for printers), and of course scrsaver to start the netware worm screensaver.

Good luck getting your Red Box online! If you run into a snag or have a question, don't hesitate to contact me. Netware is a great NOS...
