NetWare Admin & Start Menu Applications

By McIntyreM ·
When you go into NetWare Admin you can tell it what applications are available and where to put them. I have given a few applications to a group of users and placed them in the start menu. NetWare automatically creates a start menu group at the top of the menu, in which, these items are located. However, when the users click on these items nothing happens. This just started ocurring recently. Previously they worked. I thought it happened because I updated the client from 3.1 to 3.3.

NetWare Admin & Start Menu Applications

I believe you are talking about Zenworks not NetWare admin. You use NWadmin to configure zen applications.

Open up the application in nwadmin and find out what the link does, what application it starts. See if the user can do exactly what the application says.

If it's a run once script it won't run again until you either change the version, uncheck run once, or check distrubute always.

Trying running a DSrepair - sometimes this can fixes strange problems.

If you're new to zenworkscheck out:

Be prepared to stay awhile there is sooo much info here.

I have ZenWorks Starter Pack that comes with the Novell NetWare Server. We have not purchased the full version of ZenWorks. So, I used NWAdmin to create the application object, which appears in the StartMenu, as I directed the application to do. These applications function on all the computers but one. It doesn't make sense. I don't know what the difference would be that would inhibit these StartMenu applications (which the network creates upon login) from functioning. The user can click on them, but that is it. Once you click on them the menu disappears, but nothing else happens. And DSRepair didn't do anything.

A good thing is to use Reporting - if you have ZEN2 that is. ZEN 1 did not have this feature as far as I know. It's underneath one of the buttons at the right: all you do is check what you want to have a log of (failure or success, distribution (=get files and registry keys to users) or launch (=do whatever the command line says) and to which file. This can be anywhere, as long as the user can reach it and has write access to it. The log may seem a bit cryptic, but if you click on the "Help" button while in that Reporting screen, you get quite detailed information about the error codes. Often it's just "file not found" or "no access", and I'm sure it will set you on the right track.

As, I responded to the first answer we do not own the full version of ZenWorks. Only the Starter Pack that comes with the NetWare Server.

Seems as if the "Run Once" option is enabled, but only for this user? Try checking in his machine's registry: HKLM\Software\NetWare\Nal\... If you find the application there, remove it's entire key. Careful, it may be there several times. Maybe the NAL (Or NALEXPLD if you like, that is what puts your app in the Start-menu) messed up on this one machine.
What kind of application is it: a shortcut or a distribution? What OS: Win 9x or WinNT? What versions of NAL, ZEN (There were starter-packs for 1.1 and 2) and NetWare? Any Service Packs installed (NW & ZEN)? These things are all important to know when troubleshooting.

No, these applications are not set as "Run Once". They are shortcuts to programs that are installed on the workstations. All systems are using Windows 98. The server has NetWare 5.0, with ZenWorks Starter Pack 2. I'm not sure which service packsare installed, because its been a while and I don't remember. I am presently reading through the information for NW Service Pack 6a. I am hoping that by installing the latest service pack, it may fix this problem, along with some others.

NetWare Admin & Start Menu Applications

Ok....just to make sure I understand....and correct me if I'm wrong...

1. NW5.0 and ZEN 2.0 starter pack
2. Applications are set to appear in the start menu and they launch and application that is on the local drive.
3. On one computer, the application will not launch, but it will on all of the other computers

First check and make sure that the executable really exists where you think it is is supposed to exist (local drive or network drive). If a network drive, make sure that the user has rights to that drive.

Second, check in the registry to see if that application has pushed. (You can search by the app name or the GUID associated to that app). Once you find the app (should be 4 instances) deleted the key from the registry.

Three, does the problem follow the user or does everyone who goes to that workstation have the same problem?

Four, have you tried to verify the app? Right click on it and select verify. You may have to change the app so that it appears onthe desktop as opposed to the start menu.

In response to your third point, the problem only ocurrs on the one workstation. The user may go to other stations and it works fine. In regards to your fourth point, I found something quite interesting. I right-clicked on the items and got the following four options: Open, Copy, Properties..., and Sort by Name. When I clicked on Properties, I got the usual [Application] Properties dialog box. When I clicked on Open, the stupid program opened. But it does not open when you left-click on it. Lastly, even more interestingly enough. When I go back to the program that I just opened and right-click on it in the Start Menu, I now get the Verify option. What is going on here? This is all confusing to me.

What you are describing is very weird. You may want to try resinstalling the Novell client.

You may already have done this, but if it is just the one computer that is having the problem.....re-image it.

I have completely rebuilt the system and get the same problem. Thanks, but this solution won't work.
