Netware amount of free space reported

By shafferm ·
I support a LAN with a Netware 4.11 server and Windows 98 workstations. When I add or delete files to or from the Netware volume, the amount of free space reported by Windows, Dos, or Netware does not seem to change much. Is ther a time lag or something I need to do for the change in the amount of free space to show up? What is the most accurate way to monitor the amount of free space left on the Netware volume? Thanks.

Netware amount of free space reported

When dealing with netware volumes, the most accurate numbers on space will come from using either NWADMIN and looking at the volume properties, or using NDIR /VOL at the command prompt

When files are deleted from a volume, NetWare keeps them in aspecial directory (VOL:\DELETED.SAV). This works somewhat like the recycle bin in Windows, but will work no matter how the file is deleted -- command line, gui, by a program, whatever. Using FILER or SALVAGE (depending on NW version), you can getback deleted files. Deleted files are permanently removed as the space is needed for new files.

The command "PURGE VOL:\*.* /a" at a DOS prompt will remove all deleted files from a volume. This can be useful when you are whacking entire folders at a time and want to tidy up.

Also, network directories can be flagged as "purge immediate". In that case, files deleted from that directory are permanently deleted at once, and can not be salvaged.

Bud is correct in all that he says. In addition, if you are using the Novell client for W98 (v3.32 currently) you gain much of the functionality of SALVAGE and PURGE. You also get more information from standard Windows Explorer. By right clickingon a folder or drive mapping you can get a wealth of information. Bear in mind with drive mappings you will receive more information if you map atthe root of a volume rather than a child directory....
