Netware upgrade from 4.11 to 5.1

By tmcclintock ·
What is the best method to upgrade from Netware 4.11 to 5.1? There's a catch: Netware 4.11 is on an old server with a very small DOS partition. I am purchasing all new hardware for Netware 5.1 However, I need all the data and NDS migrated over to the new server.

Netware upgrade from 4.11 to 5.1

If you have new hardware, consider the "Across the Wire migration". You do this by using the "Migration Wizard", which is a Windows application you run from a workstation.

In short:
-Install NW51 on the new server in a temporary tree
-Prepare NW4 server (correct patchlevel etc)
-Run Migration Wizard. This will transfer NDS information from NW4 to NW5, bring down your NW4 server, and reboot your new NW5 server with the correct NDS info.

More detailed info:
http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/nw51/setupenu/data/hufaj5je.html

Read this carefully, and well before, so both your workstation and your old server meet all the requirements before you do the actual migration.

And make a good backup!

Jim

This reply not for points.
If you're a TechProGuild member, here's a pretty good article covering the Migration Wizard:
