i currently have two buildings, 250 metres apart, i am currently designing my network which will consist of 250 users in one building and 120 users in the other i have two windows 2000 domain contollers and one linux server, network traffic is expected to be high between the two buildings, i will also need connectivity via my isp, i now need some expert advice on how to connect all this together, could you please give some advise and guidance on how to accomplish this

OK, between the buildings I would use a Fibre Optic cable for the communication media. The nice thing about F/O is that a electrical storm can't cause any problems on it. In the buildings I would connect the users computers to the network via switches, I don't even consider using Hubs. The servers I would keep in one site in a server room with all the required facilities in the server room, (Fire prevention. raised floor, etc). Connection to your isp preferbly through a proxy server and a firewall, this is to prevent hackers and viruses getting in and causing network problems. Even with a firewall and proxy server you must have an anti-virus package running on each computer. Most virus come onto the network through your own users that takework home. Hope this helps.

Depending on your Internet traffic, you will need at least a 256K connection. If you aren't hosting your own web site, frame relay is a good choice (in the U.S.). Run this through a firewall (I use Sonicwall and it's been superb for over two yearsnow). If your servers are centrally located (recommended), have them connected to full-duplex switches (I use 3Com 3300 FX fiber switches to the wiring closets and 3300 TX to server room devices) with VLANs configured to cut down traffic between the buildings. Connect the buildings via fiber-optic cable for reliability and security. Get full-duplex hubs (3Com Superstack 500 with fiber module) in the buildings to feed the desktops. If you expect high traffic, you must insist on full-duplex equipment or you will get frequent lock-ups because of network congestion.

I should use a Gigabit Ethernet backbone to connect the servers and the links to each building. The external links should be implemented in FO; and when running the fibers make sure to put some extras for future use or extra bandwidth.
In a very simple schema, you may use a central gigabit switch, and segment the LAN in accordance with your needs.
To connect to your ISP you should consider router/firewall combination, and depending on the use is where you are going to insert it in the LAN. For example the connection point could be the backbone if you plan to give all your users internet access, or a new segment in the web server if the connection is only for external users/customers to access this local web server.

i just need some other details regaring
what ntwork protocols should use with the linux and windows servers?what network addressing scheme should i use, and the network address and configuration?
server to server communication?
remote access connectivity?

Go with Fiber Optic cabling, make sure you run redundant links (You never know). As far as the network I would go with a Gigabit backbone, Gigabit switches/NICs and CAT6 cabling. I recommend Cisco (Routers/Switches), SonicWall (Firewall), 3COM (NICs), Mohawk (Cabling), Panduit (Patch Panels) and at least a full T1 if not redundant T1's. This set up should be good for years to come. I would recommend more than just 3 servers, but then again I am not aware of what services you are running. Normally 1-2 file/print servers, 1 DHCP,DNS,WINS server, 2 DC's for replication (one with DNS & WINS for backup), 1 Exchange server, 1 IIS server, 1 Database server, 1 Backup server (could use a file/print server for this). Each server should have Raid 1 or 5 via SCSI3 devices for speed. Hope this helps.
