Network Backups

By firesheep43 ·
Having tried existing Wintel systems and not being very impressed with the speed or cost, I have chanced upon a backup gem. I have a network of 56 PCs, 4 servers and one IBM AS/400 (iSeries) machine. On clients I use scheduled batch files to backup files to a Win2K Server, security is set to each user from the client. The files are then copied via batch file controlled from an NT server to the AS/400. A CL Program on the AS/400 writes it all to tape with the daily AS/400 backup. I back up 20 GB of data daily, with the tape write to a QIC-5010 26GB taking 30 to 40 min. I run full backups every night, keep each tape for 30 days and a perm tape each month end. Recovery is slick! Only 30 minutes from tape in to copy back to the client. Ikeep one days backup on disk on the Win2K server, and one days on the AS/400. If you have an AS/400 or S390 in your organization, consider it for use as the ultimate backup server. Cost? $900 for the Win2k server, batch files are still free! Security? No file sharing on the network, Win2k server virus scans and the AS/400 is impervious to viruses.
