Network between Win2000 and Win98

By lieblersp ·
I'm building a network between 2 or 3 computers at home. I've got the NIC installed on both. It recognizes the card, but both pc's still can't see each other. Any ideas?

Firstly, if you are not using a hub (i.e. a simple cable between the two NICs) you'll need a cable that's wired differently (a crossover cable).

Failing this and any other cable problems, make sure both computers have the same workgroup name and different computer names. If this is correct, set the ip addresses in the same subnet (to keep it simple, pick two addresses like 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Now ping one from the other (eg from 10.0.0.1 type "ping 10.0.0.2) from the command prompt. if this works, tcp ip is set correctly.

if you can't see one from the other, make sure that you have set file and printer sharing on on both computers, and have shared some folders.

if it still doesn't work, install netbios and unbind tcpip from the network cards. it's quick and easy.
