network cable unplugged??

By g_freckleton ·
i just installed a network adapter into my pc and am trying to set up a local area connection with my laptop, both running xp. both network adapters are working fine according to the device manager, but when i start the network setup wizard it says that my network connection is disconnected.

In network connections folder under my LAN it says that my network cable is unplugged, but it is definately plugged in. any suggestions?

thanks

Unless you have a switch or hub you will need to use a cross-over cable to connect these two. The cable is available at most computer stores for about the same as a straight-through one.

If you have a switch or hub then you might look to that as being the problem.

A couple of things to try if the crossover cable doesn't work, run > cmd When in DOS:

ipconfig on your boxes to see if there is a MAC address

ping 127.0.0.1 as a loopback to see if the NICs are really working

Post back with results.

I know I'm stealing someone else's thunder here. But for sake of quick answer, here goes.

A patch cable is not a crossover cable. Send and receive wires are reversed in a crossover cable allowing one to connect 2 PCs without a hub or switch.

See link below for more details.

So you either need a crossover cable or an inexpensive switch/hub (usually under $20.00).
