Your network card is bad; it may drop the connection unattentionally. Replace with those reliable network card such as 3COM.

or "Timeout"

Sometimes your NIC or the other end of your network connection (a hub or switch, or the RAS server if you're talking about a dial-up network connection) has a value that will shut down the connection after a specified amount of time. This is usuallycalled the "timeout value". I typically have seen this on servers, including, and very much especially dial-up servers at ISPs. This allows them to optimise the use of the resources that they have in place to provide access for their other customers.

Does your connection drop if you're using the connection? Even after an hour or two? Probably not.

Your choices are:
1 - Live with it. If you're not using the connection, you're not using the connection.
2 - If this is LAN connection, talkwith the sysadmin and see if they can change the rimeout value.
3 - If this is a dial-up solution, see #1.
4 - Write some sort of little script that simply sends some network traffic down the wire every 5 minutes. That way your network won't see you as "idle" and won't drop the link.

Is it possible to reestablish a network connection without having to reboot?
