network connection between 2 NT boxes

By highlander718 ·
I have a small Internet (frontpage) application (on a NT box = NT1) that uses some databases (SQL)residing on another one (also NT=NT2). Recently I had to reinstall the Token Ring card on the NT2, everything looks fine but the application on NT1 times out all the time ever since. More than that from the NT2 I can't even access the web page on NT1 anymore. All the other wkstn's can access the web page, but when launching that particular app., the operation times out.
I'm thinking maybe I missed some services or protocols when I reinstaled the NIC on NT2?
By the way the NT1 is on Ethernet (it's a mixed network).
NT2 has and definitely used to have only the TCP/IP protocol. I know the changes has to be made on NT2, but I'm out of ideas for now.

network connection between 2 NT boxes

If your IP info is manually entered, check the subnet mask, gateway etc are typed correctly, this is one of the most common reasons for connection failure using manual entry.

Also, can you connect to NT2 from NT1?

What about pinging the IP of NT1 from NT2? Can you ping the loopback address from NT2(127.0.0.1)? If not thats your problem!!

IP on NT2 is OK (subnet, gateway). I can connect from NT1 to NT2, see all the folders. I can ping NT1 from NT2 and loopback is working too.

This be a bit off the shelve but have you verified that both systems have the same workgroup or domain.

No they don't. And they never did. It was working fine though, before the NIC reinstall.

If adding a new NIC has been the only change to the previously working setup, then the issue would seem to be with the card configuration.

Does NT2 work for other things, or is this machine permanently off-line? I'm not overly-familiar with TR but are there speed/duplex settings that can be checked?

Possible fragmentation issues? TR packets are ~4000 bytes or so vs. Ethernet 1518. Try forcing a lower MTU on the TR box.

Hope that helps

Is MTU, the maximum frame size ? Is there any rule to set that value (right now I have 4216)? Can it affect other things ?

Thanks,
