Network connectivity problem

By jspaz ·
I am running XP Home on a peer to peer network. After downloading an XP update, I can no longer access the internet or other computers on the network. I can ping all local ip addresses EXCEPT my own. My router is functioning as dhcp server. I can release and renew. All other computers on network are OK. I tried using XP recovery to prior date. Also, reloaded Windows in attempt to repair. Also installed new net card. Still no luck. Any assistance will be appreciated.

If it was service pack 2 update then try turning off firewall (temporarily) just to see if it needs to be configured. As for the internet access maybe you can try another browser like Firefox ( and see if you can access the internet since it is NOT dependant on internet explorer. Since your ip on the network is the only one that can not be pinged then it sounds like a firewall problem. Hope this helps out somewhat.

Just a clarification. Although I can ping the other computers on the network, I cannot access them by computer name or sharename.
