network deployment

I have assigned to deploy win2000 network consist of One server and number of clients. Client belongs to different departments.Now is there any way when client from finance department browse my network places only see finance dept computers not other depts e.g planning, audit etc etc.?
Is it good idea to implement from security point of view?
All suggestion will be help ful. thanks

strickly answering your subnetting question, the "old" way of subnetting/segmenting a network was done with routers. With managed switches, you can VLAN a network into segments [replacing what a router would do with a VLAN].

Is it a good idea? that depends upon the companies need for securing information within a department in the LAN network. you can secure information stored in shared resources that are in a Windows Active Directory environment through permissions.

Why don't you just disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on
all of the client computers? This will prevent them from browsing network neighborhood altogether. There should be no need for them to see other computers on the network. All shared data should be on a server with the proper Share/ntfs permissions.
