Network Design

by Oldefar In reply to Network Design

There is or should be an architectural approach of which network design is but a part. The architectural approach begins with business objectives (what are the software developers developing). To this are added business requirements (security, market driven OS the applications will run on, budget information, projected growth, equipment vendor constraints based on business relationships). Next comes the technical requirements.

The technical requirements will outline specifics like trafficvolumes both average and peak, simultaneous sessions, protocol constraints, latency constraints, user counts, reliability, resiliency, redundancy, management strategy, existing domain and addressing structures to be followed, external access required, security policy.

These then drive the three key elements of your design - physical (where stuff goes), logical (protocols, fail-over, naming, management design) and component (which boxes do you use).

Step 1 for you - get the technical requirements for the project.
