Network Drop Outs

By shaun ·
We have a windows 98 machine on the network which keeps dropping its connection on the network. We have tried reinstalling, adding new network card, fixing IP address etc. The Server is NT4 running DHCP with two IP ranges and two WINS servers. When it drops its connection it can see another machine and recieve mail from the server however it cannont access the MS Access database on the same server.

If by "see another machine" you mean Ping, then your TCP/IP, network card is functionning correctly. If you are talking pop mail, you do not need to be authenticated on a server for that (except mail server). But to access you MS Access database, you need to be authenticated and have rights on the server for that.
It sounds like your problem is at the client level. You may need to check if rights to the database are still assigned. Are there any timeout settings in your client/server forthat station.

Is it the same case no matter who logs on? If so, the problem is very probable on the workstation side and not the server side. Did you try Win98 SE?

Hope this puts you on the trail at least.

Good luck.
