network hangs

By longennamer ·
I have an interesting problem. the problem began last Tuesday at 12:20pm. It happened again on Wed at 5:00pm, Thurs at 6:00pm, and monday at 10:50am.

The network hangs, many workstations lose sessions to our HP3000 server and network programs they are running off of NT servers lock up.

And our NOVELL server locks up with an abend: Page Fault Processor Exception
Error code 00000000
Novell Netware 4.1
Running process: Interupt Service Routine
Interrupted process: Server 02 Process

The network hung again today, but our novell server didn't crash. Could the novell abend jam the entire network? or is something else jamming the network? and how do I begin to troubleshoot?

thanks
elang

Hello Eric

just a quick one, check your network for broadcast storms, do you have any routing protocals running and do you have a firewall that may be logging all these broadcasts. A good way to check for your network utilisation is the use of a Flule Optiview this will tell you where all your traffic is coming from and to it will also give you a bandwidth reading.

Do you use switches on your network if so try setting them to mac filtering so as to control broadcasts on certain areas of your domain and cut down on collisions and high bandwith on certain areas.

If you are running your network on layer two and have everything on the same collision domain this may be your problem. Let me know as much about your network architecture as possible and i'll get thinking for ya.....

Check what your users are doing. This looks like times that your more frivolous users would be starting up games that could be overtaxing your network (lunch).
