Network Hiccups

For months now I have been experiencing a brief network interruption (or hiccup), and I can't seem figure out why. I have a Dell Latitude D600, and I have never had any problems with the Latitude series in the past. The symptoms are as follows: My screen blinks & my curser is no longer on the page or open dialog box it was in. I experience a very slow shutdown & startup due to the "shutting down and establishing" network connections. Windows Explorer hangs more times than not when opened. When I'm logged into the music just stops and I have to start it all over again. On a side note - when I mouse over Start -> Programs most times it starts to open the programs but then just turns gray & I have to wait until it renders the folders & icons. Attempted resolutions include: checking the event log, running a virus scan & spy ware utilities, changing the speed & duplex on the NIC, updating the BIOS & NIC drivers, and I even had Dell come out & replace the NIC. Nothing seems to help... perhaps someone else can.

Did you check both the application and system logs?

I take it you dont have a scheduled AV update/scan or something similar causing it? Or even something like Outlook auto archiving? The loss of focus by the application you were working on points to something like this.

Without knowing the rest of your network setup its hard to offer possible resolutions from that angle. You might want to try and find out if the hiccups coincide with increased network traffic - which is normally fairly easy to see if you can see the lights on your hub/switch/router.

It could be simply power saving features of the nic or hdd - as a test in device manager right click both these items and select properties. Go to the power management tab and deselect the 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.

Try logging performance monitor on a number of different variables over a hiccup and see if the hiccup is systemwide or if its limited to memeory, cpu, network etc. Thta might shed a bit of light.

Other than that try turning on the HDD performance monitoring and log it over a hiccup. It could be that the HDD is on the way out.

If none of these help let us know a bit more about your network setup and we can have a look down that road.

Have you checked your processes for spyware? Also, open Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and then on CPU box. That will show what process(es) are hogging the most CPU time. I spent a couple of hours removing spyware from a client computer that acted just like yours. When you go to, it may break off because something may be trying to hijack your browser. If you haven't done so already, check out AdAware at and/or Hijack This. Be careful with Hijack this, as the registry entries it gives are only possible spyware. Backup the registry first if you are not sure. Hope this helps.

There are alot of nasties that can elude anti-virus and spy search programs. They usually attach to your browser and can create all kinds of problems. If you can't find a fix through anti-virus apps or programs like AdAware/Spybot go to a forum like TomCoyote or SpywareInfo and let them give you a hand. Here's a couple of links:

All of the others mention that many spyware typr apps do evade detection using adware, spyware and antivirus programs. I wanted to add you should try running hijackthis and seeing what shows up.

Also, someone should also ask the obvious question... have you test your Cat5 cables? A short could cause this.
