network installation-HELLLLP

By azizhakim ·
In an attempt to redo my practice network install undergoing this drawback which i need help with. Here it goes.Idid a network install the very 1st time & with help from techrepublic members things went really well. This time while trying an unattend install problems are thus-After booting from the network start disk which was created through net client Administrator, made the necessary changes in protocol & system files
the client machine boots, loads the nic drivers, binds the protocol to the board & since i have a DHCP service, enabled it in my start disk, the net ini starts but it cannot get ip address from server where my installation files are located.at that stage
it stalls and stays there.am i overlooking something.I deleted my dhcp scope, recreated another & it is still initializing TCP/IP via DHCP & STALLED AS I AM WRITING THIS. ANY THOUGHTS WILL BE APP--another thought i had was remove dhcp service & re-install but before i do that i will wait for some input

I ran into this same "chicken and egg" problem when I tried to use TCP/IP. I ended up using NETBEUI. The problem is that the TCP drivers are so big they won't fit in lower memory, so you need HIMEM.SYS. But the TCP drivers are so big there's no roomfor HIMEM on the floppy. They are installed by default with NETBEUI. If you're installing over a nonrouted segment use NETBEUI. If you have to use TCP you'll have to use 2 floppies, copy everything to the hard disk, manually edit config.sys, and boot from the hd.

Best, Glenn

Define a reserved IP address in the DHCP service then do the the network install using this fixed IP ( Don't make it a DHCP client ) . Once your system is up and running then you can make it a DHCP client . If you still face a problem and you are not installing from a routed segment then you can install NETBEUI as a second protocol on the server and use NETBEUI on tthe client to complete the install . once the system is running you can configure TCP/IP fron scratch .

Good Luck

In order for this to work, you will need himem.sys on the floppy. If you cannot fit it on the floppy, using NetBEUI will be the easiest way (as long as you are on the same subnet). This is not a DHCP problem, it is just that you need to load himemin order to get all of the TCP/IP drivers to load. One thing to note, you cannot load all of the drivers in the high memory area. You will have to experiment with which ones you can load high. I can't remember which ones won't load high. If you load everything high, the system will hang.
