re: PC Lab

In brief, you do it with either a bunch of cables or go wireless. Is that brief enough?

Seriously, there is no such thing as "in brief" when talking about networks. What you're asking for is free help to design your network and I doubt that anyone here is willing to provide free design when they earn their living doing it. But, here are a few things to consider:

First, knowing you have 20 PCs to network is fine. But, a "network" doesn't care about numbers. Knowing what OSs you're running on all the PCs and other hardware, such as hubs, switches, routers, cable type would help the network engineer that you eventually hire.

Second, do you want to set up a domain? Do you have a server? If not, what will run your DNS, DHCP, etc...?

Third, what kind of access to the internet do you have? T1? Cable? DSL? Will it handle the traffic for 20 PCs?

Now that you have a basic idea of how difficult it can be to set up a network, it's time to budget for hiring a PRO.

I'd like to know what moron promoted him to IT Dept Manager status?

by ManiacMan In reply to re: PC Lab

Or so he claims to be. If I were an IT Dept Manager and didn't know such things, I'd be working at a McDonalds Drive Thru window the next day because anything left of my career would be over at that point.

Ask your CTO, perhaps he will know.

IT Dept Manager, huh? And you can't connect a small LAN to the internet? I'd like to know what moron hired you. All the IT Dept Managers I've ever known or worked for knew simple things like this. If I were you, I'd be ashamed of asking such simple things on a public forum with a title of "IT Dept Manager".
