Network name cannot be found

By Shanghai Sam ·
I am trying to connect to a W2K from NT4 workstation using \\ or net use method and I get 'network name cannot be found'.

I can ping using the computer name (DNS OK?)

I can connect using an IIS app that runs on the server.

The 2K server cannot be seen on Network Neighborhood.

Ive entered a static mapping into WINS.

Basically all I want to do is to access a share on this server.

I am at my wits end !

Do you need administrative rights?
Are you entering the share correctly? ie. \\server\c$.
Try connecting to a shared drive on the server, as shown above, if it works then browse to the share you want.
Try mapping using IP address. If it works your problem is DNS/WINS configuration

Are you a member of the domain that the Win2K DC belongs to? If you cannot see the server in Network Neighborhood, I would say it's likely that you're not logged onto the domain. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the workstation (I believe in NT it is enabled by default, but it's good to doublecheck). Hope this helps!

Out of curiosity, what happens if you try \\ipaddress\share I'd double check the share name just to make sure everything is correct. I fought a system for a couple of hours once until I went to the other box and double checked the share and say I had mistyped the share name
