Network Neighborhood Disappearance

By whiter ·
I have lost my network neighborhood icon sometime lately. I try to go add a client in network in the control panel and it locks up during building driver information database. Now I can't add anything requiring building driver information database. How can I restore the Network Neighborhood????

If you are running win95/98 try reloading the OS - this will fix any errors it finds and you may have a driver database error. Have you tried Safe Mode to make the changes?

I really don't want to reload the OS. I have a lot of information on the computer. How and what do I need to do in safe mode? Anytime I try to build a driver database it justs hangs. And when I go to Network Settings it says.." Your network is not complete. Would you like to comtinue?" In a dialog box.

Depending on how long it's been missing you may be able to retrieve it without reloading. Click start shut down and choose restart in ms-dos mode. Once at a command prompt type scanreg /restore and hit enter. From there you will be able to choose which date you would like to restore the registry to. I am not sure how many days your network neigborhood has been missing and I am not sure how far back in time you can go but give it a try. You will lose anything you have done or installed since that date so be sure to back up anything important to you.

The scanreg /restore only went back a couple of days. I tried it and all it did was make me have to use my system recovery disks and I lost most of what I had. Thanks anyway.

Before resorting to reinstalling Windows, Boot into Safe Mode. This should allow you to remove all Network components without problems.
Reboot into normal mode and reinstall required drivers.

NB - If you have problems in Safe mode, its a good bet your OS would benefit from a reinstallation.

Let us know if this helps.

Safe mode didn't help so I had to use my system recovery and lost most of my data. Thanks for your help.
