Network path not found.

By mikeinalaska ·
My corporate network is running on an NT 4.0 server. My remote client is Windows XP Pro. With the remote client I can VPN into the network and validate with no problem. I can ping PCs on the corporate LAN so I know I'm connected. But I cannot mapa drive to a shared resource on the server. I get the error message "The network path was not found". This works fine with a Windows 2000 client but not with XP Pro. I've tried the "net use" command from a DOS screen and get the same message. I've entered \\servername in Start/Run and get the same message.

Sounds like a name resolution problem. Compare your DNS/WINS settings on the win2k client and the XP Pro client.

Also, I would check what protocols each are using.

I had a similar problem. Make sure that you do not have the firewall active (or zonealarm installed - like I did) when setting up the original network connection.

Try installing netbeui on the Server if it's not
there and then do same for XP. In XP you need
the XP Pro CD. It's in a directory called
ValueADD. See it this helps.

Don't waste your time installing netbeui, as it cannot be bound to a dial-up adapter. It is an authentication issue between NT/XP.Have you enabled IP forwarding on your NT? Setup the XP accounts on the NT machine to have admin rights. When you do figure it out, pls let me know, as Microsoft South Africa cannot answer this question!!!

So far, it seems this is a DNS issue. If the servername and it's IP address are added to the Host file on the XP client, the path is found. However, Microsoft has not been able to answer why a manual Host file entry is required on the XP client and not on the Windows 2000 client.

This issue was finally resolved by Microsoft Technical Support. This NT network has no DHCP/DNS server. In Windows 98 and Windows 2000, we can bind the NetBEUI protocol to a PPP connection (dial-up and broadband, etc.) or a VPN connection, but thisoption is not available in Windows XP. In Windows XP, we can only bind the NetBEUI protocol to the local area network connection. The workaround is to enter the host IP address/name in the Hosts file on the client PC.
