network+ or ccna?

by Some Guy in Seattle In reply to network+ or ccna?

As always, the generic answer:

"That depends."

The N+ is a vendor-neutral certification intended to teach basic theory and operation of networking. Some other vendors accept N+ as part of getting their cert (notably Novell in the CNE). It isnot necessarily better, but is more general considering it doesn't promote any one vendor's equipment.

The CCNA is intended to teach cisco hardware and software exclusively, and is the entry-level certification for switching and routing on cisco equipment. It *is* vendor-specific, but since cisco are running by far the majority of the internet's routing infrastructure a case can be made that it will be a long time before it goes out of style. It is also the first step to cisco's higher certs like the CCNP and CCIE (which is where the larger paychecks come in).

If you anticipate your career to include a lot of activity involving network infrastructure I would take the CCNA since the principles involved there will take you farther even if you're not using cisco (although you will if you stay in the field long enough). If your career will not focus so much on that, then the N+ will do you just fine.

Hope that helps,

Hi it all depends on you...how well and comfortable are you with networking .IF you still have some doubts i would take network+ simply because its fundamental for cisco..Once you are proficient with networking you are ready for cisco
