Network printer disappears

By twest ·
I have some Windows 98 machines in remote offices. In one office, the network printer ocassionally disappears from the user setup. Then when the user goes to print something, they get an error stating that they need to setup a printer before they can print. When they try to re-setup the printer, they get an error that the printer is offline. After rebooting the computer, the printer re-appears. This happens randomly. A user can print one document just fine, and receive the error on the next document. Can someone please tell me what is going on here?

Make sure that all of your WINS settings are properly configured on each machine and that the WINS servers are push/pull partners of each other. It sounds like that may be the problem.

You may also want to update to the latest printer drivers.
Good Luck!

This sounds like profiles problem. Try deleting all the PWL files and the profiles For the computer. Right click My Computer Select properties and profiles. Delete all user profiles.
It sounds like for whatever reason the user has two profiles and one of which doesn't have a printer installed. The solution I gave you above should rebuild the users profile and get rid of uneeded profiles.

How is your remote client set up? To a RAS Server? Are you using VPN? To make sure your network resources are available to the the remote client try enabling LM announce and editing the lmhost file in the windows folder. In Network properties, go to file and print sharing properties and enable LM anounce. Then edit the lmhost file point to the PDC server and the domain name. Microsoft Knowledgebase has more info on this. i.e. (10.1.1.100 servername #PRE #DOM:domainname). Then in a dos prompt, type nbstat -R to purge and reload your cache.

Assuming you have a peer-to-peer network in your offices, the problem is not so complicated. Most common, you installed the Network Printer on one of the Win98 machines. Well, every time you start another computer, it will try to query the printer'sPC, and if this one is not poweredup, windows will asume the printer is Offline. So, the easiest way to resolve this problem is to start the PC with the printer first, then the others in the NetWork. However, if this is not possible, just instruct the employes to uncheck the mark near "Use Printer Offline" component in the appropriate Print Manager... (My Computer -> Printers -> Network mapped printer -> Double-click for printer manager -> Printer from the Menu -> Use printer Offline).

Hi there:

Go to settings>printers>printer Icon>details
>spool settings. Try either 1. print directly
to printer or 2. spools data type is raw.
This usually fixes the problem.

Good Luck
