network printer from login script?

By chipw ·
Can a network printer be setup in a login script? I would like to be able to add a couple network printers to our login scripts, if possible, like I have network share drives and private drives assigned. Can this be done? The login server is NT4sp6a, most workstations are NT4 and a couple W2K and a couple XP. I have tried these -
NET USE \\COPYROOM\HP5SI: \\COPYROOM\HP5SI
doesn't work, and
NET USE LPT1: \\COPYROOM\HP5SI
doesn't work because I have a local printer on LPT1. Tried in both XP and W2K.

Thanks for the tip. Now that I have con2prt on a test machine, I can use it to get 1 printer set up as the default, but no more than one. I am a bit confused by this line from the manual for con2prt -

[/c \\printserver\share | /cd \\printserver\share]+]

what is the plus sign for? The docs do not give any clue to its purpose.

I have tried these -
CON2PRT /cd \\simrad-3\CompRoomE312 |/c \\Acctprtsrvr\HP8000
(results in only the first printer being set up)
CON2PRT /cd \\simrad-3\CompRoomE312
CON2PRT /c \\Acctprtsrvr\HP8000
(first printer set up, can not connect to the second)
I ran NET VIEW on the second printserver above and it does show the exact printer named.

I'd really like to set up as many as 4 printers on some clients, 2 or 3 on most.

Use LPT2 and LPT3 for the network printers You must have a driver installed for 5si and I would install the drive for each printer in the printer folder giving each an id name such as 5si_CR Because if you want to choose these printers from windows apps then you need a specific printer name to choose in the printers folder.
NET USE LPT2: \\Copyroom\HP5si

I haven't tried this script with a NT4 domain or server but I think it should work as all of our clients (XP, 2000, NT4, 98 )run it with no problems.

Set objNetwork = Wscript.CreateObject("WScript.Network")
objNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection"\\Server\Printer"
