Network printers don't connect after installing driver upgrade

By kranson ·
I have 15 printers installed on a Windows 2003 server. 85 desktops, using W2K-sp4 and XP-sp2, use various combinations of these printers. We use Script Logic to map these printers to members of Active Directory groups.
I installed a driver upgrade on one printer, an HP4250 - PCL6 driver (we have 2 of these printers). The next day random printers could not connect to some of the desktops - but not all of the desktops. Upon each reboot a different printer will not connect. We've determined that only printers with the driver PCL6 are not connecting. Our olders printers are fine. Sometimes on the user's machine we can go to the server and connect the printer and it will show up in the user's printer list, usually with an "Access denied" message, but it will still print. Sometimes you can manually add the printer. Sometimes neither of these methods work.
