Network printers quit working in Vista

by patricia . Updated 18 years, 9 months ago

A user in our office (who happens to be my husband) has a Vista laptop that he takes to and from work with him. We have network printers at the office that have been added and used with success. The problem is, he has to remove and re-add them every time he reconnects the laptop to the network.

When he connects to the network and attempts to print, all of the printers show up, but if he selects one of them and tells it to go ahead and print, the program freezes. This is true regardless of what he is trying to print, what application he is using, and where the document is stored. The printers when viewed in the control panel all say they are “ready”. If I remove the printers and re-add them, voila!, it works fine.

Any ideas to resolve this rather annoying problem? All the other computers (laptops and desktops) in the office are on XP. None of the XP laptops seem to have this problem. (They have issues all their own ^_~) Our network is a wired network. We can connect wirelessly to other networks in the building, and that has caused issues in the past on other systems, but I made sure to turn the wireless off on this one.
