Network printing ramdomly failing

By serginho ·
Hi,

This one is driving me nuts!

I have 2 customers that use eTrust V7.1. One of them has a Win2K Server and the other a Win Server 2003.

Recently, both started to have network printing problems. In both cases, printers are shares in PCs. The next items are common to stations on both customers:
- eTrust V7.1
- Windows Update
- There is always a PC with Win98 involved in the problem

It's always possible to navigate the network and connect to any printer but, randomly, when trying to print anything, the originating PC (always Win9 pops up a message saying that there was a problem connecting to the printer and it has been brought offline. I can see the job in the spooler. Insisting in the menu, switching off the "use printer offline" option, sometimes makes the job start.

I've tried many things like disabling AV, updating drivers, trying other printers in other PCs, installing MS DSClient9x. My next try will be removing the share and PC comments, as I read in a paper from MS, regarding the maximum browse list in Win 9x.

If anyone has another idea or already had this problem, please let me know

Thanks

Been a while sinc i used W98 to print with, but one thing that is wrong with w98 printing is the spoolss.dll file. The good news is that you can use an ME spoolss.dll file to remedy most of the W98 printing problems.
The only gotcha to that is you have to revert back to the W98 file for windows Updates.
I always had a copy of both so i could bounce back and forth. Use sfc to extract to C:\windows\system32\.

worth a shot, may stop the disappearing printers.

Hi

Another thing to check is that the share names are short, and that they comprise just alpha-numeric characters - no apostrophes ' or other similar characters.

Good luck

Already checked. Standard names, just A-Z and/or 0-9

Just a thought...if you are using DHCP on those workstations, maybe setting a static IP might help.

I've seen many people blaming DHCP for something that does't work in a network. Believe me, I've never seen a fault other than no connection at all caused by DHCP: it's always something that has been wrongly configured. Checked, anyway: no changes. Thanks

HOW exactly do you reproduce this problem and WHERE exactly are the printers cabled? are they parallel or usb printers cabled to pc running win98 or winxp or win2003svr or what?
if you've set up the win98 boxes as print servers, in my experience, it just is not going to work. practically speaking anyhow. if you count time as money, which I do.
if you are determined to bang head on this problem, are your customers in domains? or workgroups?
if AD domains, you might try the AD client software from download.microsoft.com for win98
but I'd just get a quality HP print server if this were my problem...
